Phil and Kay Hague discovered Ashton in February 2017 following an unproductive house-hunting trip to Rutland. The plan was to relocate from Essex to an area that Kay had enjoyed living as a child, closer to Phil’s family in Nottingham. So it was somewhat out of desperation, that Kay interrogated Google Map for places somewhere between Essex and Rutland and hit upon Oundle. Looking at houses for sale near Oundle, a beautiful thatched cottage on Ashton Green popped up on Rightmove – it was love at first sight!
During the 6 months to purchase the cottage Kay and Phil enjoyed the hospitality at the Chequered Skipper Pub when visiting the area, only discovering that the lease for the Pub was up for sale when it seemed that the sale for the cottage might fall through. This was a discovery that set the path for a new vocation and with help from a family friend with experience in hospitality, Phil and Kay set the wheels in motion.
Kay and Phil moved in to their cottage on the Green in August 2017, finally picking up the reigns at the Chequered Skipper in March 2018 with a simple plan to continue to offer the same warm welcome and great pub food that made them fall in love with this very special place.
